Christmas Past Ghostly

It's funny how what seems to be random often isn't when you ponder it. This sad little bit of street art reminded me that no matter how tough it is, it could always be worse.

This guy is a little blurry because he wouldn't hold still for a pic! but I thought he was splendid just the same.

Photographing the sunset down by the lake; Winterbird hung out with me for a good half hour to watch.

As opposed to calling him a snowbird, which he actually isn't (he lives here year-round.)

Spotted this as we were passing it on the highway (I wasn't driving, promise.)

Party of Four

Our neighborhood pair of sandhill cranes recently added two more members to their family, as I discovered when I walked out into the backyard last week:

Their twins are lighter in color and a bit smaller, and follow Mom and Dad everywhere.

Dad, who has always been very protective of Mom, now screeches at anyone and anything that strays near the kiddies. He's also added a note of fatherly pride to his walk:

I do like petunias, and these would look neat in my front window boxes. Another possibility for Spring!

I saw these while gathering some ideas for next year's garden; love the fiery colors.

Puzzling

One thing you never expect to see on the ground and curb when you step out of a car: puzzle pieces. What's even stranger is that I immediately wanted to pick them up and see if I could put them back together (in a parking lot!)

Recycled

This is the inside of a mixed-paper recycling bin at a waste management facility we recently visited. We hauled about 250 lbs. of junk mail, unwanted flyers and such to the facility, but 100% of the paper we delivered will be processed, recycled and made into new paper products. So the next time you purchase something made from such materials, it may partly contain some of my old mail. :)

Spotted in a restaurant parking lot. I don't think the owner was worried about anyone stealing it out of the back of his truck, either. :)

December Web

This is a second shot of a web I saw one afternoon last week and photographed for PBW. I photoshopped this second pic to be much darker in order to give it a bit more drama. I think it came out interesting.

Laundry, Done!

My laundry room rarely looks like this so I had to take a picture, ha.

Abby Napping

This is Abby, my mom's pup, who spent Thanksgiving with us so Mom could go visit family down south. Abby is also a rescue dog; she was found terrified and wandering the streets by animal control. Despite her stray status Abby is very friendly, gentle and sweet-tempered so we believe she once was cared for, although no one ever claimed her.

Abby only had one more day to live before euthanization when (happily) my mother met and adopted her. I know it's not possible for everyone to adopt a pet, but if you are thinking about a puppy or a kitten as a gift for your kids this holiday season please visit your local animal shelter. There are hundreds of lovely and lonely critters there just waiting for someone to bring them home and make them part of the family.

Beaded Berries Mini Tote

This is what I ended up making from that experimental beaded quilted piece I posted earlier this week:

I used a very wide length of red grosgrain ribbon to serve as the handle, sides and bottom of the little tote, which I think gave it an interesting look. I'm going to try this again but use colored faux pearls instead of glass beads for the berries.

Cranberry Bliss Cookies

During the holidays I have to stay away from Starbucks so I'm not tempted by their cranberry bliss bars, aka the most fabulous winter treat ever. Then I wondered if I could invent my own version of them, and played around with one of my favorite ginger cookie recipes, adding white chocolate chips and dried cranberries to the dough, which resulted in these:

After tasting this first batch I will admit they're a bit too intense to really match the bars Starbucks makes; this probably due to a combination of lots of ginger + blackstrap molasses in the original recipe. I think I will have to tone down the spices and possibly use less molasses. Also have not figured out how to work in the cream cheese icing in my version. Still, it was a fun (and tasty!) first try.

Batik Tote

I had a bunch of 2-1/2" batik strips left over from a quilt I made last year, so I decided to sew them into a tote:

I didn't have enough of any color to match the sides, but since it was a project just for fun I didn't worry about it.

In the center of each side panel I glued a resin and metal butterfly bezel; these were leftovers from a journaling project:

Even the batting I used was cut from pieces trimmed from other projects, so this tote is a true scrap buster.

My Healthy Lunch

Usually my meals aren't this pretty, but I'm trying to eat healthier/lighter lunches. My guy took me to a neat little coffee shop where they served this simple but tasty Asian veggie salad. Now I want a set of orange salad bowls for my own creations!
