La Cerise Panel Finished

La Cerise panel #1 is finished:

In addition to the embroidery I played with some buttons and ribbon rose embellishments, which I thought came out rather neat:

Seed-beading the floral fabric (on the left here) took forever, but the effect is really nice:

Before the Business Card

For ten bucks I got an instant mini-collection of Victorian American calling cards, also called name cards, which were popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century:

The designs on the cards are pure Victorian, and can be quite intricate and detailed despite the fact that they are the same size as (or even smaller than) the average modern-day business card:

Some have little surprises, like this card sporting a tiny envelope, in which is an even smaller card with the caller's name hand-written on it:

Some calling cards are tricky, too, like this next one.  At first glance this looks like a rather tame/polite card, but lift the flap and underneath?  Much more personal sentiments . . .

Guys evidently weren't afraid to hand out cards with flowers on them . . . or birds!

Butterfly Week #5

The little guy on the right is a bit blurry because he fluttered just as I was taking what otherwise would have been a spectacular shot (of course).

La Cerise 2

I've done a lot of quilting and a bit of beading on La Cerise panel #1. The Mondrian effect of using the colored seam binding as mini-sashing for the patchwork blocks was unintentional but I like it.

Earring of the Beholder

Today's pic has an interesting story attached to it. Backstory first: I recently lost one of my favorite pair of garnet post earrings, and made a stop at a local department store to see if I could find a match. While in the jewelry section I heard an older woman a couple feet from me fuming to her companion about something. Her face was so red I almost could hear her blood pressure spiking. When her friend went off (presumably to get a sales clerk) I went over and asked if everything was okay.

"I'm just upset over that!" She jabbed a finger at the earring display in front of her. "How could they sell something so horrible?"

"This?" I touched the offending word earrings, and she nodded. And this is what upset her:

I don't much care for word jewelry -- it's usually banal or offensive, no middle ground -- but with this pair I couldn't figure out why she was so angry, so I asked, "What's so horrible about hope?"

"Hope?" She peered at the earrings again and then let out the strangest sound. "I thought they spelled rape!"

I've started my next quilting project, which is just for fun:

Stay tuned to the photoblog to see what I make of it.

Mia's Quilt

This is a quickie jelly roll quilt I'm making for my niece's baby shower; she's having a little girl named Mia in August. The quick part came into play when I got only two weeks notice of the baby shower, which is not nearly enough time to make my usual hand-quilted crib quilt. I machine pieced and quilted it, and now all I have to do is finish attaching the binding (it's pinned right now, which is why all but the lower left corner looks a bit wonky.)

*Our* Throw

A couple of weeks ago over on the writing blog I mentioned that author P.N. Elrod is holding a virtual garage sale to raise funds to pay for her pup Fuzzy's vet bills. I am always happy to help fellow fur-face lovers, so I purchased a lovely throw, which arrived last week:

As you can see the pups are very pleased with it, and I think they might even let me use it once in awhile.
